The craziest thing has happened since completing my 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse.
Can’t. Stop. Making. Them.
The 10 days was over 3+ weeks ago, yet I haven’t left home without one since.
A. I feel better, lighter, sharper.
B. They taste divine.
C. I am lazy. (A 3-minute meal prep can’t be beat.)
Did I lose weight after 10 days? Sure. Eleven pounds total. But forget about that, as it’s not even half the story. There were other changes much, much more exciting.
Understand that the entire time I was on the cleanse, I fantasized about Day 11 the way a jailed man does an upcoming conjugal visit.
Spicy Tuna Roll.
Salmon Caesar Salad.
Like Arya Stark on Game of Thrones, I did a nightly roll call before bed of the names of all those I planned to “kill” as soon as I got to the other side. Though tongue rather than sword would be my weapon of choice, the level of focus and determination was no less intense.
The minute I awoke at dawn on that blessed day, my joy started to build. I gave myself a quick pep talk. OK. Two green smoothies today, plus your first real meal in over a week. Lunch? No, dinner, I think. Dinner’s better. Mmmm, what to have, what to have, what to have…
Giddy with anticipation, I slurped down my AM smoothie.
Aaahhh. Good stuff. A familiar calm washed over my stomach and system , and I jumped into my work for the day. I barely noticed when lunchtime rolled around. Still contemplating what culinary delight I was going to treat myself to for dinner, I absentmindedly started sipping on my lunch smoothie.
Damn! This is REALLY good stuff, I thought, enjoying the extra zing from the fresh ginger I’d popped into the blender at the last minute. The way it played off the flavors of the frozen mango, pineapple and grapes was intoxicating. Another great benefit of being done with the official cleanse, I thought. I get to create my own green smoothie blends on a daily basis, with all the stuff I love. Sad that it was almost done, I started sipping at a glacial pace to make it last longer while I ran down my mental list of meal options for later on.
Finally, my workday ended and I prepared to go home. I had to stop at the store for a new batch of greens anyway, so I figured I would make up my mind about what I wanted then. As I stood over the hot bar of my favorite local health food store, I realized something shocking.
I couldn’t pull the trigger.
I just didn’t want it. (I wanted to want it, but that’s not really the same thing, now, is it?)
Don’t ask me how, but I just knew eating what was before me would have my stomach feeling “some kind of way.” And I wanted none of that action. At least not today. Maybe tomorrow.
Well it’s been three weeks, and I’m still waiting on “tomorrow.” The thing is, in a prior life, I would have barreled ahead with an “Eat first, wallow in regret second,” attitude. But something has definitely changed. The more green smoothies I drink, the more salads and other clean meals I crave. The more salads and other clean meals I eat, the more motivated I become to preserve what has now become the daily status quo.
Chocolate, sugar and dairy cravings? Gone. Desire to fill up on starchy grains? Gone. Judging by how loose my pants are, the inches and pounds continue to come off, I suppose. But I can’t say for sure, because I haven’t weighed myself. Nor do I care to.
I’m only focused on how eating like this makes me feel. How it makes my skin glow. How there’s no more drama playing out in my stomach, or at the entrance of my clothes closet.
Will I ever eat any of my favorites again?
For sure. And I’ll continue to blog about them. But I can already tell that consumption will be the exception rather than the rule. How do I know? Because I tried to mess up on purpose the other day, and stopped after the second forkful. I just couldn’t “consummate” the meal before me, and lost total interest in continuing after only two bites.
Let me tell you, that’s NEVER happened before.
It’s a new day.
My Blendtec has become more crucial to me than my car in recent weeks, and the stuff that’s coming out of that blender these days is truly terrific, with new recipes being discovered daily.
Stay tuned. Much more to come on my green smoothie journey!
